Swarm Keeper

Maintaining a magical connection with a swarm of nature spirits, Swarm Keepers are rangers who channel this living cloud of creatures into combat. The swarm moves with you, reacts to your commands, and turns enemies' every step into a harrowing ordeal.

Subclass Features

Gathered Swarm

3rd-level Swarm Keeper feature

At 3rd level, a swarm of intangible nature spirits has bonded itself to you. Until you die, the swarm remains in your space, crawling on you or flying and skittering around you. Once on each of your turns, immediately after you hit a creature with an attack, you can cause the swarm to assist you in one of the following ways:

  • The target must succeed on a Strength saving throw against your spell save DC or be moved by the swarm up to 15 feet horizontally in a direction of your choice.
  • The swarm can move you up to 5 feet horizontally.
  • Until the start of your next turn, the next attack roll made by a creature other than you against the target has advantage.

Swarm Keeper Magic

3rd-level Swarm Keeper feature

Also at 3rd level, you learn an additional spell when you reach certain levels in this class. Each spell counts as a ranger spell for you, but it doesn't count against the number of ranger spells you know.

3rd mage hand
5th web
9th gaseous form
13th arcane eye
17th insect plague

Writhing Tide

7th-level Swarm Keeper feature

Beginning at 7th level, you can briefly direct the swarm to carry you. As a bonus action, you can fly up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.

Mighty Swarm

11th-level Swarm Keeper feature

At 11th level, your Gathered Swarm grows mightier in the following ways:

  • The distance of forced movement increases to 30 feet.
  • The swarm sheds dim light in a 10-foot radius.
  • If a creature is moved by the swarm, it must succeed on a Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Swarming Dispersal

15th-level Swarm Keeper feature

At 15th level, you can momentarily scatter the swarm to shield yourself. When you take damage, you can use your reaction to gain resistance to that damage. You vanish into the swarm and reappear in an unoccupied space within 5 feet of your previous location. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
